We were manufacturing a shaft for a customer that was hardened to 55 Rockwell C and needed to have a thread put on after. This particular thread had a milled keyway through the middle of it as well. We typically send this kind of part out for thread grinding as a last operation. Our CNC turning manager asked if he could contact Sandvik Corporation to see about hard threading (as opposed to hard turning) these parts while finishing his other operations in the lathe. We agreed and within a day we had a new Sandvik insert in hand and successfully threaded all the shafts at a fraction of the original cost and time.
